Smriti Irani Rebuts Cultural Concerns Amid BJP Surge in West Bengal Election Counting

Smriti Irani criticizes cultural narratives amid BJP’s strong lead in West Bengal election counting, highlighting issues of violence, governance, and voter resilience while questioning silence over alleged incidents and asserting public trust in BJP leadership.

As counting progressed in the West Bengal Assembly elections on Monday, senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and former Union Minister Smriti Irani launched a sharp counterattack against claims that a potential victory by her party would undermine the state’s cultural identity, asserting that criminal acts cannot be justified under the guise of culture.

Responding to concerns that Bengal, historically regarded as a melting pot of cultures, might lose its identity, Irani stated that crimes such as rape, financial exploitation, and intimidation cannot be described as cultural elements. She said that sexual violence, illegal financial practices referred to as coercive commission-taking, and support for unlawful immigration cannot be normalized as part of any societal tradition. She further criticized incidents in Kolkata where, according to her, even the mother of a rape victim was publicly harassed, calling such actions unacceptable and beyond the definition of culture.

Irani also took aim at the state leadership, referring to remarks attributed to the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding women’s mobility, and questioned the silence of those who previously spoke about preserving cultural values. She accused them of failing to respond when individuals were allegedly targeted and killed for expressing political opinions.

Highlighting incidents from Diamond Harbour’s Falta region, Irani questioned why there was no public outcry when residents reportedly claimed they were threatened with violence, including threats of sexual assault against female family members. She described the election outcome trends as a decisive response from voters, signaling a rejection of such conditions.

Expressing gratitude to voters, Irani acknowledged the risks faced by citizens who cast their ballots despite alleged threats, violence, and a history of intimidation. She said that many voters demonstrated resilience in the face of fear, choosing to participate in the democratic process regardless of the circumstances.

Irani attributed the electoral support for the BJP to its governance record and leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that voters in West Bengal have indicated trust in the party’s ability to deliver administrative change and stability. She emphasized that the electorate’s response reflects confidence in the BJP as an institution capable of driving transformation.

The ongoing counting trends, coupled with strong statements from senior leaders, underline the high-stakes political climate in West Bengal, where issues of governance, law and order, and public trust have taken center stage. The developments mark a critical moment in the state’s political trajectory, as voter sentiment appears to challenge long-standing narratives and redefine the contours of power.
